How do you handle the worst-case scenario when it happens?
No matter how good things are at a certain moment, things can radically change in a week, a day, an hour, one minute, a second … think about a millisecond. You get to be fired from your dream job, your main business partner leaves you, your accountant hidden few millions of dollars from your books, you are thrown out of the market by a competitor, you have a car accident … and the list can go on and on. Nobody wants to hear about those but … the reality is that shit happens with the speed of light both in life & business.
We are taught by the personal development industry to focus on the positive thinking, and it is great, but … as Robert Kiyosaki to think about the best times but also to prepare for the worst times. And he is right!
One thing I’ve learned over the time is that you can’t grow in the confort zone, and that fantastic things can happen when you are with the back against the wall. You find solutions which were not available few hours ago … and as a result you grow.
We … leaders, marketers, entrepreneurs struggle with thinking about what to do when the disaster strikes not from the immediate effect but thinking of how it will affect our life, and the business over the next days, weeks, and months. We put such a big monster ahead that we become paralysed from fear, unable to take actions, decisions, which can get us out of the mess. This is related to how our mind works.
I had many moments when it didn’t seem like it will be a tomorrow, and somehow I was able to push through. And one very valuable exercise is to start running the worst case scenario in your head, and to become ok with it.
Yes, you may lose the business, the car, the benefits, even your house can be foreclosed. Yes, it would be very bad, but you could still retain your health, your family, be able to rent a place , and start again. One heads up in such a moment would be to think if you have an emergency fund, and if not to create one so you will be ok 6 to 12 months no matter what happens so you could get back on your feet.
One magic thing is that once you run the worst case scenario … if you are a man prepare to potentially cry (the women will cry anyway), a certain peace will be installed so you will be able to think properly and find solutions to go out from the mess.
It’s like … ok … which is the worst of the worst scenario that could happen … if I don’t make a change right away! This simple exercise is liberating, try it!
